The Rusty Monkey takes it's name from the primary material it is tied with, Orangutan Rust Craft Fur. This fly is very easy to tie, swims great and fish eat it. We fish this pattern for snook, reds and also a great backwater tarpon fly.
I start with a pink glow-in-the-dark throat, add the craft fur wing, top the fly with a black Krystal Flash topping and add a set of gold/silver/black Pelagic Eyes. Add some bars with a brown Chartpak marker on the back for added realism.
The one in the picture is tied on a 1/0 tarpon hook but we often tie these all the way down to size 4. This is a great color to use in the waters here in the 10,000 Islands and Everglades.
